SMOO Challenge
From the Nominator
For the first time ever, Singapore Management University launched the SMOO Challenge, a virtual fundraising run, aimed at bringing the SMU community (and beyond) together in celebration of our 20th anniversary in 2020. It was also meant to galvanize the community during a difficult COVID-19 year by keeping fit, boosting mental wellness, and morale—all for a meaningful cause. Net proceeds raised went toward bursaries for underprivileged students adversely impacted by the economic downturn.
At the end of the campaign, 1,218 participants (students, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and family members of SMU, and even members of the public) in more than 90 teams across 16 countries accomplished 57,346.35 km in 20 days, setting a Singapore National Record of “Longest Distance Covered Online by Runners in 20 Days” too.
In total, more than SGD413,000 was raised in 20 days via the following channels: (1) participation fees, (2) community donations, (3) SMOO Challenge Fundraising Ambassadors, (4) corporate donations, and (5) matching funds from quasi-governmental organisations. With these funds, 48 financially challenged students were able to receive a SGD8000 bursary each, thus making an impact literally with every single step.
