Stanford Medicine
From the Nominator
Stanford Medicine magazine focuses on stories that will engage readers inside and outside of academic medicine, raise thought leaders’ awareness of Stanford perspectives on important medical issues, and spread the message that Stanford is a leader in medical education, research, and patient care.
Each issue features stories on a theme, told from the perspectives of physicians, researchers, and students trying to solve the mysteries of medicine, and through the eyes of patients looking for answers to their health challenges. Storytelling and design decisions are shaped by our intention to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. The magazine is published in print and online. The online edition includes all the content in the print edition, as well as audio and video features.
In 2020, Stanford Medicine published two issues, one 40-page issue focusing on cancer, and one 52-page issue focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic.
The magazine’s print circulation is 30,000; subscribers include Stanford medical school alumni, biomedical thought leaders, members of the media, donors, the Stanford Medicine community, and the general public.
From the Judges
Stanford Medical Magazine's design is a very nice balance of scholarly research and aesthetic appeal. The budget was mostly dedicated to print and mailing, and the end result with a minimal design budget is an effective use of resources. Publishing online first in order to consistently be able to update information—given how fast and frequently things changed during the pandemic—is an innovative touch to the magazine.
