#STEMPride: Celebrating LGBTQ Voices in Science
From the Nominator
To celebrate World Pride Month, the University of California reached out to its diverse LGBTQ+ STEM community to ask: Why is LGBTQ representation in STEM important? How does being LGBTQ make you a better scientist/researcher? The answers formed the basis of a social media campaign, highlighting the importance of LGBTQ visibility in STEM, and the unique challenges that out researchers face. Paired with a video on UC psychologist Evelyn Hooker, whose groundbreaking research helped advance gay rights, the campaign not only reinforced UC’s values around diversity and inclusion, but also how diverse perspectives are vital to advancing science.
From the Judges
Great way to reinforce the values around diversity and inclusion, and to showcase how diverse perspectives help advance science (while reinforcing their position as a leader in STEM and research). Impressive social statistics, doubling results over the previous year's Pride-themed content, and upping engagements 100% over the previous month.
