Syracuse Manuscript: Syracuse University's Black and Latino/a Alumni Magazine
From the Nominator
Syracuse Manuscript magazine is a very special publication at Syracuse University. Telling the stories of SU's Black and Latino/a alumni, students, faculty, and staff, Manuscript's targeted approach truly speaks to the constituents of the Office of Multicultural Advancement, which serves this population through alumni engagement and fundraising. The publication is printed each semester, and occasionally offers a summer digital version. The inside front cover provides an inspirational letter from Rachel Vassel, AVP, Multicultural Advancement, herself an alumna and first generation graduate of the university. Articles highlight diverse alumni engagement and achievements, important cultural events, student success, faculty appointments, university DEI initiatives, and donor impact, all with a cultural lens. Key fundraising messages are peppered throughout the pages of Manuscript, reminding alumni of the many ways that they can support SU—especially encouraging donations to the Our Time Has Come Scholarship benefitting underserved students. With SU's Forever Orange Campaign underway, a giving envelope is included with every issue, as well as a listing of the scholarship fund's latest donors. More than a university publication, Syracuse Manuscript offers diverse alumni the opportunity to support their communities through their engagement with Syracuse University.
From the Judges
The redesigned Syracuse Manuscript: Syracuse University's Black and Latino/a Alumni Magazine uses effective design elements to complement their story telling. We appreciated that the magazine focuses on a target demographic in a way that other submissions (more focused on specific schools, etc.) did not. They magazine did a nice job of elevating donor stories from a multicultural advancement perspective.
