The Core
From the Nominator
"The Core, the alumni magazine for the University of Chicago’s undergraduate college, is published twice a year as a supplement to the University of Chicago Magazine. The 40-page magazine is sent to college alumni, as well as parents of current students—about 50,000 recipients in all.
Named after the college’s core curriculum, the Core speaks to the taste, experience, and outlook of our particular group of readers. College alumni of all generations possess a shared culture, inculcated by the college experience and especially by the core—“a grand socialization project,” in the words of the college’s long-serving dean. Our readers are bookish, curious, and critical (sometimes cantankerous), with an absurdist sense of humor.
Our goal at the Core is to make all of our alumni readers—no matter when they graduated—feel acknowledged and included. For parents, the Core offers an inside look at the distinctive institution their student attends, so they can understand and feel part of this transformative experience in their child’s life."
