"The Enigmatic Anton Hermann-Chroust" - Margaret Fosmoe,William Anderson, Summer 2021
From the Nominator
Could a revered, longtime professor--now long dead--possibly have been a Nazi operative before and during World War II? The allegation sent us into a deep dive investigation of the life and career of Anton-Hermann Chroust, a noted German-American professor who spent more than 30 years on the University of Notre Dame faculty. With each historical record uncovered, Chroust’s life, personality, and career became more intriguing. It was a story worth telling.
From the Judges
Notre Dame's profile of former professor Anton-Hermann Chroust was an engrossing read. We applaud the editors for digging into a surprising topic for any alumni magazine: was a beloved and eccentric professor actually a Nazi agent? We wish the piece had taken a slightly firmer point of view in answering that question, but the telling of the story was excellent and gripping--a real model of storytelling.
