Hero Image for Resiliency on the Mother Road
From the Nominator
"This story provided a rich opportunity to play with iconic mid-century imagery through illustration. For inspiration, I visited the subject of the story, the Route History museum on Route 66 in Springfield, Illinois. I drew inspiration from the road signs, the design of the Green Book, and other ephemera from the 1960s.
I sketched out how the title could be broken into signs seen from the road. The fonts were reminiscent of 1960s road signs. The color scheme is derived from the shades of the Green Books over the years. The background is the Springfield skyline.
I used Adobe Illustrator to illustrate and Adobe Photoshop to animate, bringing the image to life with blinking lights just like you would find on a roadside motel sign."
From the Judges
Beautifully composed and executed illustrations that work well as the hero image on the website. All the judges really enjoyed that animation aspect of the supporting materials.
