How to Think Like a Scientist: A Crash Course
From the Nominator
"With misinformation about COVID-19 vaccinations abounding, plus attacks on scientists and science itself becoming more widespread, the time was right for a series of articles that thoroughly explored the scientific process, debunked myths, and made the subject less confusing for a lay audience. Designed as a crash course in how to think like a scientist, the series employed a variety of storytelling formats to convey some of the most important questions, processes, and approaches followed by researchers to produce evidence-based work that leads to new breakthroughs. In addition to case studies and historical examples, the series was sprinkled with illuminating observations from top Cedars-Sinai scientists about the practices and mindsets that help drive great science.
“How to Think Like a Scientist” was featured in the fall 2021 issue of Discoveries, Cedars-Sinai’s flagship magazine. Discoveries has a circulation of 115,000 targeted members of the Greater Los Angeles community. Through Discoveries, Cedars-Sinai aims to reach a broad audience of patients, donors, faculty, staff, media, and friends to share the stories of our incredible research and innovation and its impact on people’s lives."
From the Judges
This is a fun, well-written piece that helps people understand what goes into scientific study, highlighting your institution's experts in an easily digestible way. Very timely, too, as faith in science and experts was called into question by so many during the pandemic.
