HSUHK FunD (Virtual) Run – Social Engagement and Running Event
From the Nominator
"Originated in 2018, the HSUHK FunD Run is a social engagement and running event organised by The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK). Apart from raising funds for HSUHK, it is positioned to become one of the signature events in the neighbourhood that promotes the positive messages of healthy living, family activities, and social inclusion in the community.
The first physical run featured two race categories: 10 km and 3 km. It attracted over 1,200 participants, including members of the general public, corporate organisations, NGOs, HSUHK alumni, students, staff, and secondary schools.
The second run was planned as another physical event on 22 March 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the event was postponed and further transformed from a physical run into the HSUHK FunD Virtual Run between 18 December 2021 and 2 January 2022. The event had a kick-off ceremony featuring a treadmill team relay competition and a virtual run over two weeks during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Runners planned their unique routes and completed the registered running distances at their own pace and time as individuals, groups, or both. Running records were uploaded via the event website.
Despite the pandemic's impact, HSUHK managed to hold the event with over 670 runners from all walks of life and raise over HK$1.8 million. In celebration of its 45th anniversary in 2025, HSUHK anticipates re-running the event in a mixed mode to engage a wider audience and connect overseas alumni and supporters."
From the Judges
HSUHK created an event unique to its audience during a time when in-person connections were difficult to forge. The pivot to a virtual event could have derailed the event completely. Instead, it brought together a variety of stakeholders and created a first-of-its-kind event in Hong Kong.
