LMU Magazine Summer 2021 — “Crowning Achievement”
From the Nominator
"LMU Magazine is the university magazine and flagship publication of Loyola Marymount University, a private Jesuit and Catholic university in Los Angeles. Our goal is to elicit pride in and support for LMU and communicate LMU’s institutional position as a regional and national thought leader. LMU Magazine aims to occupy a unique space among university magazines by its distinctive visual aesthetic and quality in content ideas and writing craft.
Although LMU Magazine usually publishes twice a year, budget cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced our publication frequency to one issue a year. The summer 2021 issue was published during the university’s very public recommitment to racial equity and racial justice. Although the magazine rarely publishes a theme issue, we often aim to produce “threads” of complementary content about timely subject matter. This issue features several pieces focused on racial justice: “Stage Rights” about a seminal civil rights-era meeting of James Baldwin, Robert F. Kennedy, and several important Black America’s leaders; “Black and White” about a trove of 20th century photography of Black U.S. leaders; an interview and timeline dealing with anti-Asian hate incidents; “Leimert Park Village” about a neighborhood at the heart of L.A.’s Black community; and the photo-based inside back cover.
This issue testifies to the third leg in LMU’s three-pronged institutional mission statement, “the promotion of justice.” Letters, emails, and online comments and personal comments indicated that the issue was deeply appreciated by the LMU community."
From the Judges
The LMU Magazine Summer 2021 – “Crowning Achievement” entry was fantastic. The stunning cover did not disappoint, delivering engaging and well executed content and visuals throughout. Two judges scored this as their favorite entry. The “colors were amazing,” and the magazine covered very vital topics with excellent illustrations, including “the tomato page and the illustration on the meeting of Black Civil Rights leaders and RFK.” The LMU entry definitely met its goals and provided good digital content and guest articles.
