"Missing Out" Illustrations
From the Nominator
"The story "Missing Out," in our Summer 2020 issue aimed to capture the experience of the Class of 2020. We hired artist Sam Ward and came up with a series of concepts.
The opener depicts our Bell Tower, a popular spot for graduation photos, but there is no one in the cap and gown. Later, a diploma sits in a mailbox, a student works online from an above-the-garage bedroom, and a recognizable academic building is shuttered.
The muted color palate conveys the overall mood of the piece. We see what appears to be dusk in one scene, a sunset in another."
From the Judges
A very strong concept with an art style that evokes emotions from the reader. Judges all agreed that this piece really spoke to what a lot of students felt and experienced during the early stages of COVID.
