Reinforcing Culture and Navigating Pandemic Fatigue Through Interactive Staff Retreats
From the Nominator
"During a time when employee connectivity was limited to Zoom, morale was waning, capital campaign planning was beginning, and the pandemic seemed to have no end, an interactive and informative staff retreat was needed more than ever. Using feedback gathered at every step of the process, VCU’s Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) planned and executed its annual retreat to provide an opportunity for staff to reconnect with colleagues and their mission, share tactics and tools to help settle into a new working environment, and educate staff on the key goals leading into capital campaign planning.
More than 85% of VCU’s DAR community participated in the daylong, virtual retreat. Highlights included inspirational keynote speakers, 24 breakout sessions led by peers, guests and university experts, an improv session featuring DAR’s vice president, goodie bags, and more! The retreat left staff feeling more connected to their purpose, values, and peers. Here is what staff said they liked most about the retreat:
- "Talking to colleagues I have not seen in two years."
- "How interactive it was."
- "Made me stop and think about my purpose/values."
- "The ability to learn and share in small groups."
Staff retreats play a special role in supporting a positive work environment. A staff feedback loop, a diverse and committed planning committee, and the use of a production company were key factors in ensuring DAR’s annual retreat upheld our purpose and values."
