Showcasing Audubon's Birds of America
From the Nominator
"In thinking about our annual report calendar, our five-person team brainstorms together and considers all of our library’s treasures. That’s a lot when you consider there are more than 14 million volumes and 24 million other items in our collections to choose from!
We ultimately settled on John James Audubon’s penultimate book. The library at Illinois houses an original double elephant folio of The Birds of America: From Original Drawings and a limited edition 1985 Abbeville Press facsimile.
In the past, we realized many of our donors would receive our annual report and toss it into the recycling bin after flipping through it. With a calendar, we found that many keep and even display it for the entire year, especially when the images are beautiful and interesting. We are lucky enough to have a limitless supply of spectacular images in the university library. Out of the 13 annual reports I’ve put together for the library at Illinois, this one received the most compliments from donors, as well as library staff."
From the Judges
Brilliant concept--packaging an annual report in a calendar. The illustrations were strikingly beautiful.
