Showcasing the D'Arcy Advertisement Collection
From the Nominator
"In thinking about our annual report calendar, our five-person team brainstorms together and considers all of our library’s treasures. That’s a lot when you consider there are more than 14 million volumes and 24 million other items in our collections to choose from!
We ultimately settled on advertisements from our D’Arcy Collection housed within our communications library. This encompasses nearly one million ads published between 1890-1970. Because ads tell us where we’ve been, how we’ve changed, and what we envision lies before us, we thought they were a good choice. Calendars hold the past, present, and future—albeit over a short span of 12 months.
In the past, we realized many of our donors would receive our annual report and toss it into the recycling bin after flipping through it. With a calendar, we found that many keep and even display it for the entire year, especially when the images are beautiful and interesting. We are lucky enough to have a limitless supply of spectacular images in the university library."
