Unequal: A Series on Race and Inequality in the U.S.
From the Nominator
""Unequal: A Series on Race and Inequality in the United States" is a Harvard University communications and public affairs initiative exploring the effects of inequality on Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in the United States through the research expertise and advocacy efforts of Harvard faculty, students, and staff. The digital series highlighted faculty- and researcher-identified focus areas (the criminal justice system; democracy; education; the environment; and economic mobility) through a curated grouping of written articles, first-person essays, audio stories, lecture videos, and event highlights on the homepage of the newly redesigned Harvard.edu and distributed widely through the University's communication channels. The series had three core objectives:
• Identify areas of research on race and inequality that are underreported and amplify them across the University’s internal and external communications channels
• Identify both seasoned and up-and-coming Harvard experts on race and inequality and raise their profiles in the public consciousness
• Educate, inspire, and activate audiences and readers to get involved in their own way, from reading and listening to taking free online courses focusing on a particular issue"
From the Judges
Tackling the subject matter by utilising up-and-coming internal talent is key to the success of the series; it is strategic, and is particularly commendable. This is a well-rounded campaign that dives deep into the topics addressed and utilises a range of mediums. Using different ways to tell the story of expertise at the institution while providing valuable information for communities to use and share is impressive and creates a series that looks, feels, and reads beautifully. We were impressed with the utilisation of the low-budget for the campaign; other institutions could find inspiration in this campaign and create similar packages for respective areas of expertise.
