University of Guam 70th Anniversary Mural
From the Nominator
"A 70th anniversary is no time for subtlety. It has to be big and bold, loud and proud.
That's exactly what the University of Guam set out to do to celebrate the year of its Platinum Jubilee with the commissioning of a spirited and stately mural on the wall of its most visited campus building. With a project so close to the heart of the University, UOG commissioned the 70-ft. wide by 20-ft. high mural from one of its own fine arts graduates, Austin Domingo (@austimon), who has become a sought-after and recognizable muralist island-wide. The mural, a typographical illustration of the letters "U-O-G" featuring cultural elements representative of Guam and defining elements of UOG, was launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a special video and web story about the artist and his concept, and a matching T-shirt for sale in the campus store.
The mural kicked off the University's 70th anniversary with a bang and will also carry the celebration throughout the year. The project sought to make the University's milestone personal for the entire community with familiar elements that draw reflection on the island's identity and the steadfast spirit of Guam's university.
Implementing a campus mural has been a major success in branding an important milestone anniversary. With every student, employee, or community member who connects with the artwork and every photo taken of it and shared, the letters "UOG" and the values illustrated within it remind a growing audience of the University's long-standing role in the community."
