Ampersand Magazine
From the Nominator
"Ampersand magazine shares stories of incredible people, research, and ideas in the College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. The publication’s namesake represents one of the school’s core principles: we are strongest when we unite through collaboration and innovation. Crafted with the aim of capturing the vibrancy of our community and the breadth of our work, the publication invokes bold design, thorough reporting, thoughtful editing, and vivid imagery that showcases the diversity of our school.
This entry comprises two dynamic issues showcasing the intersection of the arts and the sciences through students, faculty, and alumni. The spring 2022 issue featured the work of an assistant professor studying modern-day housing segregation, an alumnus who served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army, and a multi-part package exploring the beauty and power of disorder. The fall 2022 issue explored how faculty members in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities are incorporating environmental justice into their work. The same issue pulled back the curtain on social media bots and highlighted the efforts of alumni working to advance mental health care.
Producing a semiannual magazine that celebrates the work of nearly 60 diverse academic programs—everything from philosophy to statistics—requires significant strategy and creativity. But it is this same diversity that makes the Ampersand a must-read magazine for some 75,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the College of Arts & Sciences."
