Bringing £1.6M to Life for a Seven-Year-Old Fundraiser and Family
From the Nominator
"Tony Hudgell is a smiley, cheeky, Formula 1-loving and million-pound raising boy. He was seven years old at the time of this stewardship.
During the 2020 lockdown, Tony, who is a double amputee, challenged himself to walk 10k on his new prosthetic legs and crutches to raise funds for the hospital that has cared for him since a baby, Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Tony’s courage and positivity struck a chord globally. He raised £1.6 million.
Thanking Tony, celebrating his achievements and reporting on impact was an unusual challenge. We wanted to create something fun and relatable for him whilst providing more detailed reporting to his family.
The solution was to create a new kind of digital stewardship package: an animated film sent via the video messaging platform, Thankview and a PDF impact report.
In the film, the doctor and nurse who treated Tony are transformed into animated characters. They visit Chelsea Football Stadium, fly to space, walk with dinosaurs and take a trip around the hospital to show Tony just how much his money can buy—in fun ways he will enjoy. They show him the trailblazing equipment he will fund from virtual reality headsets to 3D printing software and camera systems to help surgeons plan and carry out operations.
The family's report included more detail on the impact of the gift, the equipment it will buy and the difference it will make to the 103,000 children and young people that Evelina London care for each year."
From the Judges
Wonderfully emotional and profound. Inspiring the next generation of generosity. We hope they can replicate this or repurpose it in some way.
