Case Alumnus Magazine
From the Nominator
"Published three times a year, Case Alumnus is a 100-year-old magazine whose print circulation is growing after we enhanced both traditional and new media features. For example, we revived printing letters to the editor, added a reader-written nostalgia column to the back of the book, and added a lifestyle feature we call "Alumni Adventures," a one-page story on an alumni's interesting passion or hobby.
At the same time, we took advantage of new media tools. We use QR codes to lead readers from a photo box or an ad into a deeper dive into the subject, print links to web resources, and refreshed the online version of the magazine.
The combined efforts have been impactful. One result is that subscriptions are growing, probably for the first time in 30 years. Engagement is up, and alumni express pride in their magazine.
We are a small communications staff: an editor (myself) and a digital media manager who designs and posts the digital edition. Our audience is the engineering and science alumni of Case Western Reserve University, or CWRU, which sprang from the merger of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University. Our readers are technical, smart, and proud of their hard earned-degrees. As our effort prove, they also like to read about their alma mater."
