Discovery Annual Magazine
From the Nominator
"Discovery magazine from the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno, reaches an alumni and donor base of nearly 16,000 individuals around the country and the world. The magazine is our opportunity to share cutting-edge research, great successes, and major impacts of our faculty, students, and alumni. Unique to this issue is the organic incorporation of the college’s ongoing fundraising campaign to encourage giving in the form of named funds and endowments: the "Your Name Here" campaign.
Woven throughout the magazine, readers see certain names underlined and bolded, noting the many people or places written about that have benefited from or given the gift of a name to the college. A spread toward the end of the magazine summarizes the impact of these many named gifts noted throughout the issue. Our hope was to show the far-reaching impact of these gifts in a tangible way. Readers explore Professor Anne Leonard’s research on the impact of pesticides on bee physiology and behavior (pg. 12) and then learn she was the recipient of the Hyung K. Shin Endowed Award for Excellence in Research. We wrote about a graduate student, Helen Beeson, the recipient of the V. John Eisinger Endowed Scholarship, who uncovered new data challenging a long-held belief about the age of the Sierra Nevada (pg. 36). These gifts are large dollar amount donations and since publishing Discovery in September, we have seen increased interest in establishing new endowed and named funds in support of faculty, students, places, and research."
