Everglades Restoration Video
From the Nominator
"This video tells the story of student and faculty researchers at Florida International University who are helping guide the science of the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world. The video introduces viewers to the unique world of the Everglades, its threatened wildlife and its troubled history, which has resulted in a diminished ecosystem half its original size and struggling to generate the amount and quality of water needed to maintain a healthy system.
We wanted to explain the Everglades' importance both to Florida and the world at large. Actually a vast mosaic of subtropical ecosystems, the Everglades not only supports a wide variety of plant and animal life and provides important environmental services to the people of South Florida, it is also critically important well beyond its borders because its vast mangrove forests and sea grass beds act as a major carbon sink, helping mitigate the effects of climate change.
The video highlights the collaboration between FIU researchers and policy-makers as they work to engineer the Everglades ecosystems back into balance. Everyone's goal is a healthy, thriving Everglades, and the data collected in the field provides the necessary feedback to determine if the decades-long, multi-billion dollar restoration project is on track to meet that goal. The video is currently being screened weekly in FIU's Washington D.C. offices for decision-makers at the state and federal levels."
