Howard Magazine 2022
From the Nominator
Howard Magazine is the official alumni magazine for Howard University, one of the country's leading historically Black colleges and universities. After the resounding success of our redesign in 2021 that reflected the new path Howard had been embarking upon, we continued to publish important articles that highlight goals and achievements at Howard that we knew would be shared among the greater African American community that looks to Howard for guidance and credibility. Each issue covers relevant topics in today's media and is of particular relevance to the African American community, with members of the Howard community propelling the exchange of ideas and debate through our magazine. Such topics included natural disasters, mental health, corporate America, and law enforcement. We highlighted the Howard University swimming and diving team, which is the only HBCU in Division 1; and the 10 Black women deans at Howard University whose leadership inspires people beyond the university. We celebrate the diversity within Howard's own community and its wide range of expertise and knowledge and bring those diverse perspectives and experiences to the pages of the magazine. We also strive to showcase what isn't typically seen in other magazines—a powerhouse Black swimmer, a group of Black women academic leaders, Black women physicists—in an effort to normalize them.
From the Judges
Howard Magazine 2022 was an outstanding piece of work. The climate change injustice story was particularly impressive, and the stunning photo for the "Making Waves" spread was striking and perfectly captured the essence of the piece. The women deans story in the fall issue was another standout; the great illustrations on the career story were also notable, bringing the topic to life in an engaging and visually appealing way.
