LMU Magazine
From the Nominator
"LMU Magazine is the university magazine and flagship publication of Loyola Marymount University, a private Jesuit and Catholic university in Los Angeles. Our goal is to elicit pride in and support for LMU and to communicate LMU’s institutional position as a regional and national thought leader. LMU Magazine aims to occupy a unique space among university magazines through its distinctive visual aesthetic, content ideas, and writing craft.
The two issues of 2022 feature timely treatment of issues of social importance, from climate change to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film industry, immigration, college athletics, mental health, and the anniversary of Title IX. Anecdotal evidence of support has been very strong for our 2022 issues. Alumni frequently say that LMU Magazine stands head-and-shoulders above other university magazines that they receive. Specifically, some LMU athletics fans were thrilled to see we covered name, image, and likeness (NIL) issues. Other alumni told us they appreciated our climate crisis feature because it offered hope in possibilities for adapting to inevitable environmental change. Illustrations for "Sea Change" (cover and feature, winter 2022) and "Shelves of Selves" (feature, fall 2022) were short-listed in the CA 2023 Illustration Competition. The magazine has won more than 90 awards overall in the marketplace and higher education competitions and enjoys deep support, with few constraints, from the highest levels of the institution."
From the Judges
It's wonderful to see a publication tackling real-world concerns with such engaging content. The winter issue's "Time Before" story and illustrations are particularly impressive, and the fall issue's "Disconnected" story was well-written and thought-provoking. The mix of illustrations and photography throughout the publication is a great touch, making for a visually engaging read.
