LMU Magazine "Moneyball" Cover
From the Nominator
"Moneyball" was the fall 2022 cover illustration for LMU Magazine, the university magazine of Loyola Marymount University. The cover feature story is about the potential impact and implications of a new era of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and contracts that have begun to reshape university athletics and the relationship between student-athletes and their universities.
The primary purpose of a magazine cover is to persuade a reader to open the publication. As NIL issues were beginning to dominate discussions of college and university athletics, we produced a cover designed to exploit the topic’s timeliness. We’re finding that letters to the editor and Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram responses to content are all in a drastic decline in recent years. But one of LMU’s most devoted and intelligent sports fans congratulated us for taking on a topic that was both crucial to university athletics and relatively undefined in the minds of most college sports fans."
From the Judges
LMU’s “Moneyball" magazine cover features an illustration that depicts the potential implications that name, image, and likeness may have on student-athletes and their universities. The judges were impressed by how the illustration helped tell that story on the cover alone—the reveal of the back cover made us enjoy it even more. It is original and well done.
