Medicine at Michigan Magazine
From the Nominator
"Medicine at Michigan is a medical news magazine for alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center of the University of Michigan. We tell stories that highlight research, education, and patient care. Our goal is to create a magazine that will appeal to both our cherished supporters as well as anyone with a passing interest in medicine. We also try to address national issues in medicine such as teen suicide and the children's mental health crisis.
In addition to our overall goal, we had an internal goal to increase coverage of the basic sciences and created a "Back to Basics" page that first appeared in the winter issue. In the summer 2022 issue, we had a bench-to-bedside feature titled “New Hope for Patients with Rare Epilepsy.” The article told the story of basic science research at Michigan Medicine that eventually led to better outcomes for our patients. Both efforts were well received.
Last year, our office performed a survey of female alums and found they value the print magazine highly and list it as the number one way they receive news about the school. We have received positive letters to the editor for both cover features and other content in the magazine. In addition, we engage our readers with web-exclusive content and videos; email newsletters, which have excellent open and click rates that help us gauge magazine readership; and a question for medical school alums printed on the back cover of each issue."
From the Judges
Interesting articles for anyone interested in medicine, with clear tie-backs to the university. Design was professional and clean.
