Queen's Alumni Review
From the Nominator
"The Queen’s Alumni Review was born in 1927, making it not just one of the oldest alumni magazines in Canada, but one of the oldest magazines in any category. To put this in context, the Alumni Review was created in the same decade that saw the birth of television, the first transatlantic telephone call, and the invention of the vacuum cleaner. It came of age at about the same time as the grandparents and great-grandparents of our alumni.
Our readers told us that it could no longer remain in the 20th century in its design or in the stories it told. In two of the most recent readership surveys, in 2014 and 2019, common themes emerged: the design was outdated and the content was safe and bland. It had become “staid, tired, and unexciting.” If the Alumni Review was going to have new meaning, it could no longer be the magazine of anyone’s great-grandmother. As we watched many alumni magazines across North America shrink or disappear, we knew exactly what was on the line when we embarked on an ambitious re-imagining of the magazine in 2021. Our 2022 publishing cycle offers the results of this effort, guided by a new editorial direction and a new editorial team."
From the Judges
Engaging, clean design. Beautiful features, editorial sits nicely next to the advertising, nice visuals. The attention to detail in the magazine was extraordinary. Nice differential on how they highlighted directly on campus and off campus. Nice infographic presentation.
