"A Reckoning With Our Past"
From the Nominator
"In the midst of a deepening dialogue about race and history in the United States, we wanted to address Yale's own past and highlight the work that the university is doing to investigate and document its own history with slavery and racism. The seven short articles in this package explore different aspects of that question, from the use of slave labor to build Yale's oldest existing building to the scuttling of a Black college in New Haven to the commemoration of Yale's Civil War dead.
Most readers responded with gratitude and approbation for the stories. One wrote that it destroyed his "smug assumptions" about the role of slavery in New England. Another said it was "totally engrossing." The package won recognition in the 2022 Folio Awards."
