"COVID-19 hit St. Louis hard. By April 2022, the virus had killed more than 5,000 people across the region. To commemorate their lives, Rebecca Messbarger, Director of Medical Humanities in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, conceived and organized a large-scale community memorial in the city’s historic Forest Park.
“Requiem of Light” featured original music, remarks from local faith leaders, and the ceremonial lighting of 1,500 lanterns around the waters of the Forest Park’s iconic Grand Basin. A video, which was filmed over a period of months, aimed to both capture and preserve the event in all its solemn beauty."
