Royal Icing
From the Nominator
BYU Football is unique because they never wear the exact same uniform twice during the same season, which is something that we like to promote throughout the season. This year we decided to create a unique video to announce a new royal blue helmet with a glossy finish. For the longest time, our videographer wanted to create a high-speed clip of an athlete running through a sheet of glass—we thought it would be an amazing visual that would stand out in social media posts. We pitched the idea to the marketing team, and they loved it. To create the clip, we learned how to make sugar glass and poured four large sheets that we placed on wooden frames so that the athletes could safely run into them. Then we lit the set with very powerful studio lights so we had enough light for the Phantom high-speed camera. The resulting image was exactly what we hoped for. The clip ended up being one of our most popular posts ever due to the engagement it received on social media, and it helped us make a big splash with the uniform reveal.
From the Judges
Brigham Young University’s submission is a striking example of how one incredibly cool shot can elevate a video. The shattered glass effect is a visually dramatic and impressive use of just $500 and a lot of ingenuity by their in-house team. The write-up serves to convey not only the significance of this video to BYU’s football fans but also the videographer’s passion for the project.
