SF State Magazine
From the Nominator
SF State Magazine is a showcase for the life-changing work of San Francisco State University. Each issue—sent to more than 80,000 San Francisco State alumni, supporters, and community leaders—highlights the positive impact of the university on its students and the world. The goal is to nurture the ongoing bond that alumni feel with SF State while demonstrating the many ways the university is worthy of support. In 2022, we emphasized the university’s spirit of inclusiveness. We did this through a cover story about Victor De La Rosa, the new Latinx director of SF State’s School of Art (and an alumnus); Q&As with the university’s chief diversity officer and its first provost to be a person of color; a feature about a program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities; a profile of an alum who’s become a nationally recognized LGBTQ+ activist; and an array of articles that highlight the diversity of SF State’s students, alumni, and faculty. While we don’t have a final tally yet for our fall/winter 2022 issue, a remit envelope in our spring/summer 2022 issue brought in nearly $12,000 in donations to the university. Typically, tallies for our fall/winter issues have been even higher, probably because they reach readers during the holiday season when year-end giving is common. Messages to the magazine’s comments section and submissions for class notes have been increasing steadily over the last five years, as well.
