"A Thing of Beauty: Clean, Clear Air" (Y Magazine)
From the Nominator
"C. Arden Pope III, an economics professor at BYU who helped uncover the hazards of fine-particulate pollution more than 30 years ago, shares something he finds beautiful for Y Magazine’s A Thing of Beauty series: clean air. “Our souls resonate with the clean, clear air,” he says.
He and his family feel this as they hike in the mountains above the valley smog and when they hear stories of decreasing pollution changing lives worldwide. Pope especially loves the natural world when he can “see it.” In India during the COVID-19 pandemic, pollution levels reduced enough that locals could glimpse the Himalayan Mountain range for the first time in years, renewing their appreciation of the beauty around them. In this spirit, Pope affirms that clean air is important for both environmental and global health and for us to appreciate the beauty of life."
From the Judges
Really good storytelling and use of mixed media. Pope carries the video with his engagement and clear passion/energy for the environment. Meeting the family in images from their outings was a nice touch.
