UCLA Magazine Fall 2022 Issue
From the Nominator
"This was the first calendar year the UCLA Magazine was only to be produced in print once. So it had to feel special; be special. The fall 2022 issue did both. This couldn’t merely be some highlight reel of what was going on at UCLA. It had to be broader, more vibrant, and something that uniquely celebrated the joy of the UCLA identity. With that in mind, we curated engaging and involving stories that allow everyone with a touchpoint at UCLA to relate to our theme of UCLA specialness. Our cover package on “This Magic Moment” evokes that universal memory many of us hold when we found out we’d been accepted into college, while also showing, in the real stories of real students, our commitment to a diverse and intellectually curious student body.
The issue also reflects the many innovative ways stories can be told: text, charts, photo essays, and interactive storytelling. Our piece on the Judith Baca mural includes a QR code where readers can take a digital spin through a gorgeous and socially important piece of art. Regardless of how they are relayed, all of the pieces in this issue—stories on an impressive archive of aerial photography, a kicky chart of Bruin sportscasters, a literal deep dive into an archeological dig in Syria, and the secret lives of band instruments—feed one goal: to remind readers of the specialness of UCLA."
