UCSF Magazine Website
From the Nominator
"UCSF Magazine is the flagship publication of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), yet we lacked our own website for many years. Our only digital presence was a flipbook and feature stories posted on UCSF’s main website. We wanted to make it easier to find, read, and share our content online, engage our audience with multimedia, expand our reach, publish timely stories quickly, meet AA accessibility standards, and enhance the magazine's brand.
Guided by these goals, we designed, tested, and built the website in-house, always with the user in mind. We launched a full-fledged version in 2021. Our visitors now enjoy responsive design, user-tested navigation, multimedia extras, additional reading recommendations, story collections, a complete online archive (with accessible PDFs available for download), and the ability to share content easily.
We’re excited to have such a robust storytelling platform to engage our audiences and one on par with our award-winning print magazine. We’ve been pleased with its success. In 2022, we had more than 250K pageviews, with 86% new users, some 43% of users finding us through organic search, and more than 50% viewing on mobile. In addition, some of our older stories have garnered thousands of new views. This tells us we’re reaching new audiences, our SEO is working, we’re providing an excellent mobile experience, and we’re extending the life of our stories."
From the Judges
Great focus on accessibility. Modern, clean, but feels smart. Great balance with artwork, articles, photography and overall flow and navigation.
