Voices Magazine 2022
From the Nominator
"2022 was a challenging year for schools and educators. This issue of Voices, the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education’s annual magazine for alumni and friends, boldly delved into significant challenges—from unprecedented efforts to ban books to disrespect for educators and their autonomy to political pressures aimed at controlling content and more. Importantly, Voices also highlighted positive and proactive ways educators are meeting mounting pressures that fail to thwart our community’s efforts to teach for equity and justice.
Voices is designed to inform, engage, and involve readers by providing relevant and beautifully designed content. We start by brainstorming with the dean and colleagues to develop a topical theme that honors our school’s commitments to democracy, diversity, equity, and justice and recent faculty, alumni, and student work. The content plan is solidified by the end of the spring semester, with final content, photography, and illustrations due by mid-August for the fall printing and mailing.
We make the most of our limited resources by keeping the design, custom illustration, and content work in-house. We remain true to our “voices” ethos by including content contributors who speak from lived experiences and seeking alumni involvement—e.g. sharing their most impactful children's books to complement the cover story or submitting nominations for a historic new name for the school’s building.
The result is a topical, multi-source, aesthetically appealing publication that is relevant to readers’ lives as educators, researchers, policymakers, and activists and is beautiful enough to be proudly displayed at work or home."
From the Judges
Good cover art and texture. “Finding Her Voice” is a great example of audience engagement, and the faculty features (pg. 28) represent a nice communication design.
