"Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, U of T News—a division of U of T Communications—moved quickly to explore the war through a variety of angles and formats to inform and support readers.
Stories published included expert Q&As, a feature story about an exchange program for students in Ukraine and a community service article that reminded readers about counselling and mental health supports. Notably, U of T News also promoted and covered a U of T-hosted virtual address by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that was livestreamed to university students across Canada.
Through its coverage, U of T News sought to make community members affected by the war feel seen, heard and supported—all while highlighting the university’s expertise to media outlets and publicizing its efforts to assist scholars whose studies were disrupted by the conflict.
The campaign was a success, drawing significant traffic to U of T’s owned communications channels and resulting in several earned media hits."
