Wayne State Magazine
From the Nominator
"In our Spring/Summer edition, we featured a cover story on Danny Fenster, an American journalist and alumnus detained on nebulous charges for half a year in Myanmar. His story was timely, relevant, and garnered coverage in significant outlets such as The New York Times and CNN. Editor Annessa Morley was able to secure an interview immediately after his release. Speaking to her from Thailand, he gave her detailed information about his capture and imprisonment—details that were not previously released. He said the interview with his alma mater was "cathartic" as he had not had time to process everything that had happened. The edition garnered incredible feedback from alumni and continues to garner views in the digital version.
In our Fall/Winter edition, Wayne State magazine once again hit the nail on the head for timeliness. The cover story featured an alumna who played one of the Dora Milaje doubles (for Angela Bassett) in the November 2022 hit movie Wakanda Forever. The magazine hit homes at the end of November, at the height of the movie's popularity following its Nov. 11 release. This particular story continued to gain a following after the print edition's release, with over 3.2K interactions in the digital space.
Additional stories include an alumna featured on Fox’s show Alter Ego, an alumnus thriving as Emagine Entertainment’s CEO, and an alumna making a global impact creating local jobs and preserving Tibetan culture."
From the Judges
The quality of the design and the content in this publication is truly remarkable. The judges were particularly impressed by the vivid design and the hearty content, especially the articles about bugs, the arrest of Fenster in Myanmar, and the feature on the Dale Carnegie CEO. The stunning photo on the cover was also a standout feature.
