Wider Horizons
From the Nominator
"We are proud to submit our spring 2022 and winter 2022-23 issues of Wider Horizons for consideration. The spring issue, anchored by our 26-page “Never Enough Nature" special section, was more than a year in the making and the most successful issue in the magazine's 16-year history. We printed additional copies and still could not meet the demand on campus and in the community.
What truly distinguishes this issue and story is the involvement of Dr. Ninna Piiksii, a fluent Blackfoot speaker and a spiritual leader for sacred societies whose research focuses on restoring the Blackfoot names of the mountains, valleys, trails, and waterways in Paahtómahksikimi and across traditional Blackfoot territory. We included additional content online and repurposed the content for six weeks of great summer social media content.
In addition to this special story, both issues stand out for excellent storytelling, use of great images, and creative approaches to what could be less-interesting stories. Both reflect the diverse and inspiring people connected to Lethbridge College. All work for these two issues was accomplished with a small staff and budget and resulted in great feedback on our alumni survey and in messages from the community."
From the Judges
Wider Horizons is an outstanding example of well-executed design and compelling storytelling. The submission is both well-planned and well-written, which immediately draws the reader in and engages them with the content. The photography and design in "Never Enough Nature" are truly impressive. The use of curved edges on photos is a particularly striking and memorable touch. The overall design is not only functional but also beautiful, with great attention paid to the aesthetics of the layout and typography.
