150th Gala
From the Nominator
In 2023, the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto marked its 150th anniversary. With a legacy that includes the first female aerospace engineer, the first electric wheelchair, the origins of touchscreen technology, and the first-ever heart ventricle grown in a lab, the anniversary was cause for big celebration. To launch the anniversary year, the Office of Advancement teamed up with the student-led Engineering Society to host a gala at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York on April 1, 2023. With a keynote address by astronaut/engineer Colonel Chris Hadfield, the event attracted 1,300 guests—making it the faculty’s largest-ever gathering of alumni, students, staff, and donors. The evening also introduced guests to the university’s 10-year fundraising campaign, Defy Gravity, and the faculty’s fundraising priorities. With a floor full of activities – including flower arranging, a mosaic wall, caricature portraits, and themed photo booths – the sold-out event was a resounding success, building bonds across generations and strengthening affinity for the faculty.
From the Judges
Great event and theme. Graphics, promotional videos, and execution of the event itself were exceptional. The engagement "stations" really spoke to the audience. We liked that they partnered with a student group to generate ideas and be more inclusive for the audience.
