Black History Month Throwback at WKU
From the Nominator
From vintage yearbooks to social media screens, Western Kentucky University (WKU) took the concept of “Throwback Thursday” to the next level in February 2023. During Black History Month, WKU University Marketing partnered with multiple campus offices to identify students and recreate vintage photos highlighting key events connected to black history at WKU. This innovative project gave current Hilltoppers the opportunity to literally walk in the footsteps of alumni. Originally used in yearbooks from the 1970s and 1980s, selected images showcased important events, trailblazing individuals, and campus life. Through this project, we aimed to bring history to life in an innovative way for current Hilltoppers and that spotlighted our unique WKU story and our alumni. Students could learn about key events connected to Black History at WKU and celebrate them by reflecting on where we are today.
From the Judges
We loved the creative idea behind this campaign, which cleverly connects with the university's history. It's a great example for other institutions to follow. The yearbook-inspired vibe is amazing; it has originality, nostalgia, and ability to inspire others.
