Current Obsession: Back-Page Department
From the Nominator
"Current Obsession" runs on the back page of every issue of the Brown Alumni Magazine (BAM). It’s a quick interview that faithfully preserves the way the story subjects actually speak about their obsessions of the moment, whether it’s competitive jump rope or British politics, vintage clothing or genealogy. The department is a wonderful way to bring readers inside campus life and give them something to smile about as they finish each issue. BAM, as alums call it, reflects the ethos of Brown, something the university's president describes as "constructive irreverence." To be true to our alumni, we set out to tell stories that are surprising, bold, intellectually rigorous, progressive, and engaged with the world. “Current Obsession” reflects engagement, immediacy, and, of course, that constructive irreverence. We often get letters about this department and recently had an alum single out the first-person voice as part of what makes the magazine come alive for him, transporting him back to Brown University.
