CWRU Medicine
From the Nominator
After four years without an alumni magazine, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine wanted to reimagine a print publication for the post-COVID era, showcasing the breadth of this top-ranked medical school. The magazine provides an inside look at student experiences at the master’s, PhD and MD levels; outstanding faculty research; community engagement initiatives; and impressive alumni accomplishments. To achieve the school’s alumni engagement goals and highlight its four pillars, the university's marketing and communications conceived a brand-new publication from scratch, CWRU Medicine. The inaugural 60-page issue launched summer 2023 and used a variety of storytelling and design approaches to engage and inspire the reader. The publication reaches an estimated 16,000 households, including alumni, friends, and other stakeholders. It also reaches an unknown number of potential students and is offered at fairs and events, a powerful recruiting tool that provides an accessible look at life and innovation on campus. From the feedback we received, the magazine serves its purpose well. As one 1959 alumnus emailed: “The moment I pulled it out of the mailbox, I found it ‘spoke to me,’ and I couldn’t put it down until I read the entire issue. This has never happened to me in the 64 years since graduation, and I want to offer my sincere compliments on the issue that you put together.”
From the Judges
A very strong inaugural issue that was creative and engaging. Additionally, we agreed that the use of the back cover to promote planned giving was a nice touch.
