Engaging Alumni Through an Updated Website Experience
From the Nominator
How do you engage alumni with information and resources through a website? This was the question we had to answer as we addressed our need for an updated microsite. The need had been years in the making, and the original website lacked engagement, accessible navigation, traffic, and overall excitement. As the main source of information for our UC Riverside alumni, the website required a complete overhaul and redesign. We worked with our University Relations web team on design options. Some of the items we wanted to include were an alumni video as a header (an alumni-focused video had never been done); movement of images and titles; additional drop downs; and accordions, where possible, to make the pages shorter for less scrolling. When creating the content for the site, we wanted it clear, concise, and easy to follow, especially for new and young alumni under the age of 40--53.6% of our total alumni base. New sections were added including career resources by life stages; a section that maps out the transition from student to alum; and clear ways to get involved through volunteering, giving, or joining an affinity group or regional network. Engaging and getting alumni involved was the focus and that we did. After launching in September 2023, the website experienced an increase in engagement--an overall rate of 34% to 77%--within four months.
From the Judges
We agreed that it was a good, well-executed and well-evaluated microsite with clear goals. Additionally, the microsite was packed with information, and the results for alumni engagement are impressive. Overall, this project shines from all directions. Well done!
