Gratitude for All Our Relations
From the Nominator
We commissioned a powerful and heartfelt poem, by an award-winning local Indigenous artist and alumna, as a unique way for Trent University to inspire support for its $100 million Campaign for Momentous Change and instill pride in the Trent community. The beautiful video of Sarah Lewis, ’16, reciting "Gratitude for All Our Relations"--set to the backdrop of Trent's stunning natural campus--has moved audiences to tears, who react to the Indigenous-themed narrative that philanthropy "waters the sacred seeds of descendants." Trent has featured the video during national campaign launch events, shared it on social platforms, and embedded it in donation confirmation emails, serving as an immediate and visceral thank-you to supporters of the boldest campaign in Trent’s history. Viewer feedback has been phenomenal. The video, featuring Nogojiwanong-Peterborough’s inaugural poet laureate, has bolstered stewardship and forged deeper emotional connections between supporters and the university. The result has been an increase in campaign gifts and in Trent's reputation as an institution committed to elevating Indigenous voices.
