ISZL Podcast: Inviting Parents Into the Classroom
From the Nominator
The ISZL Podcast endeavors to take listeners into the classroom (and the staff room) at the International School of Zug and Luzern. It gives parents and the wider community a perspective on how their children are learning. The podcast includes talks with guests who host workshops on subjects as diverse as math enrichment and racial justice, while going behind the scenes at student events such as Youth Forum Switzerland. It also introduces the array of talent at the school, such as our language specialist Dr. Laura Caputo-Greenall and German teacher Mike Huber speaking about the difficulties of learning high German in Switzerland in the episode “Why Can’t I Learn German?” As our parent community evolves, many double-working parent households are not able to spend the amount of time inside the school that they did even five years ago. The ISZL Podcast allows them to understand our school’s values and builds relationships "on demand," as people can choose the best time to listen to the school podcast, be it in the car on the commute to school or while out jogging. Launched in the final weeks of the 2022-23 academic year, the ISZL Podcast has now had over 1,200 downloads, with the audience building all the time.
From the Judges
After we listened to numerous podcasts, this one had a refreshing approach. It is rare to have a podcast that focuses on parents and provides a bridge with academic staff. The length of time (25 minutes) has a clearly thought-out value proposition, as it fits nicely into parents' commutes. It was good to also hear the dual-language introduction to the podcast.
