The Learning DO--Development Officer Boot Camp
From the Nominator
In 2020, Development and Alumni Relations (DEVAR) at UC Davis embarked on a journey to create a comprehensive, centralized training program to prepare development officers for major-gift fundraising success. The result was the creation of "The Learning DO--Development Officer Boot Camp." Creation of the boot camp and its curriculum included knowledge and input from all DEVAR development officers and senior leaders, resulting in a nine-week intensive academy. The boot camp covers topics such as the university's history, naming guidelines and gift agreements, best practices for prospect identification, moves management, strategy design, portfolio management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion for major-gift fundraising. Different DEVAR professionals lead each boot-camp module, providing participants with the chance to interact with colleagues and build a network. Additionally, learner cohorts are able to form strong bonds and collaborations with one another to create a team atmosphere and lasting system of support. To date, more than 60 development officers have participated in the boot camp. Post-graduation, participants at all tages in their career provide positive feedback and say that The Learning DO Boot Camp tremendously impacts their success at UC Davis. They get the tools they need to hit the ground running as valued members of the UC Davis DEVAR team.
From the Judges
Bringing new employees up to speed is always difficult. Developing of a comprehensive and centralized training program was a good solution. A boot camp theme is interesting. One long training, as opposed to multiple smaller trainings, allows people to meet and spend time with new colleagues, so employees can establish a professional network on day one.
