Local Female Hockey Legend
From the Nominator
The women's Frozen Four hockey tournament came to Duluth in 2023, and our objective was to tap into the excitement around that event by producing a University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) hockey story that celebrated women in the sport. To achieve that, we decided to make a short documentary about a hockey legend in Duluth--the area's first female hockey player, Bonnie Shea. Resources for the project included staff time and department camera equipment. Time was spent seeking out the story, pitching it to our team, and accomplishing pre-production, production, and post-production work. Outcomes included high social reach and engagement (over 200,000 views); Women's Frozen Four event publicity; a local banner-raising ceremony in Bonnie's name; and curation in Minnesota Hockey Journal and USA Hockey.
