Major Insight: Find Your Place and Purpose on Campus
From the Nominator
Higher education is facing serious threats on several fronts. Some critics are questioning the value of higher education, while others are pushing trade schools as a more viable career path for many. And the approaching enrollment cliff promises to make this already competitive landscape even more challenging. University communication professionals, therefore, need more compelling and effective ways to tell the story of higher education to relevant audiences, including parents, families, and new generations of diverse students. Miami University's Major Insight is specifically designed to be such a channel. What better way to showcase the true (and sometimes intangible) value of college than by sharing the authentic, inspiring stories of the students themselves as they encounter the triumphs and challenges of navigating 21st century college life? Each episode features a dedicated student host who leads insightful conversations with other student peers, who share real stories about choosing majors, getting involved, making friends, finding mentors, overcoming fears, and more. On one level, the podcast is about demystifying an experience that can feel scary or overwhelming. But it also helps listeners make informed decisions by showcasing the diverse range of opportunities that college offers. Major Insight brings the entire college experience to life in dynamic ways that no viewbook, pamphlet, or website ever could. In addition to engaging audiences nationally, Major Insight goes even deeper as a cross-functional communications tool, which is leveraged across campus by administrative leaders, admissions, student life, faculty, and more.
From the Judges
It is always refreshing to have student voices exploring interesting campus-life topics. This creative and new approach for a podcast--for students by students--felt authentic. The podcast knew its audience and provided a service to the community. Resource allocation was also impressive--a good use of existing infrastructure.
