Milton Magazine
From the Nominator
Change was the overarching theme at Milton Academy in 2023. We said goodbye to a beloved outgoing head of school, Todd Bland, after a massively successful, 14-year tenure and welcomed a new head, Dr. Alixe Callen, with enthusiasm and great anticipation for Milton's future. These two leaders were the anchors of our spring and fall issues, respectively. The challenge for Milton Magazine was balancing a tribute to Mr. Bland while celebrating the arrival of Dr. Callen, a 1988 Milton graduate and innovative educator. In the spring issue, we covered the idea of legacy: the people and things who leave a lasting impact on our school and the world beyond. In addition to a feature on Mr. Bland and his accomplishments, we featured a thrilling profile of R. Buckminster Fuller, a class of 1913 graduate with a once-in-a-century imagination and knack for invention; a pair of sisters who've taken on a Boston retail institution; and an expert in extremism whose wise counsel has guided American leaders of both parties. The fall issue then welcomed Dr. Callen with the theme of big ideas: An innovator who thoughtfully considers the purpose of independent schools, she's made clear that her affection for Milton will not impede necessary progress. The issue also featured a rising Hollywood screenwriter challenging the narrative around Asian representation and a member of the class of 1959 who allowed his mind—and heart—to change, becoming an ardent, lifelong advocate for civil rights.
