MIT Spectrum Web Redesign
From the Nominator
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Office of Resource Development publishes a biannual magazine called Spectrum, which connects alumni, faculty, and supporters of MIT and illuminates the Institute’s mission, impact, and community. In 2023, the Spectrum website was migrated into a sub-site of MIT’s primary website, betterworld.mit.edu, which highlights the Institute’s fundraising priorities. Visitors to the Better World website now see Spectrum content on the site’s home page and in content feeds throughout the site. Our goal was to closely link our powerful impact-focused storytelling with our most important fundraising needs. Today, Spectrum magazine can be found at betterworld.mit.edu/spectrum. Additionally, 19 back issues and more than 500 individual articles were rebuilt into newly designed WordPress templates and can be found at betterworld.mit.edu/spectrum/issues. Since the new Spectrum section of the Better World website launched in November 2023, these pages have had over 17,000 views by more than 9,000 users, driving a more than 121% increase in users.
From the Judges
We rated this entry highly for the quality of its content at the article level. While we wished that the home page was more tech-forward, we found the writing, stories, and design very compelling and a standout within the category.
