NC State magazine aims to inform, delight, and surprise our readers with every issue, bringing to life stories about our alumni, faculty, students, and campus. But to reach our readers, we know that our attention to design must be paramount. We put together a magazine that is a joy to hold, flip through, and settle down to read. We make sure we have multiple entry points to stories, breaking up longer pieces with bite-sized bits, and using bold typography throughout. We give readers a mix of fun and serious treatments. For example, we had fun with illustrations on a by-the-numbers piece on physical education. But our illustrations for a story about an alum living in war-torn Ukraine were subdued and conveyed the mood of the article. In each case, the design matches the content, and the design is created to keep the reader engaged.

The use of illustrations and photography adds energy and creates meaningful connections between design and content. The variation in typography, color, and layout keeps the reader engaged and aligns well with the branding.
